Russo Reacts to Smith’s New SiriusXM Show

Chris Russo expressed his mixed feelings about the recent developments surrounding Stephen A. Smith’s new show on SiriusXM. During a radio segment on Wednesday, Russo mentioned he was finding himself navigating the complexities of sports radio, especially with the impending replacement of his colleagues Michelle Beadle and Cody Decker’s program, “Beadle and Decker,” by one of Smith’s new offerings.

“It’s definitely a tricky situation. From what I gathered today, Michelle and Cody hadn’t done anything wrong, given the enthusiastic audience response,” he said.

Russo pointed out that he was aware Smith had been engaging with SiriusXM for roughly six weeks now. “I wasn’t sure where they stood in the talks, but I’d heard murmurs that it might not go through, mainly due to the lack of a video element. I had seen Smith recently, so that’s all I can say about that,” he remarked.

The seasoned broadcaster expressed some frustration about how the cancellation was handled. On Wednesday, Beadle and Decker discovered their show would be axed just hours before going live.

“There’s really no easy way to implement these kinds of changes. We all know that the handling of it matters,” Russo stated. “Ultimately, I think the best way to proceed is to just make a clean break. Trying to provide an opportunity for goodbyes usually doesn’t pan out well.”

He added, “I recognize there are hurt feelings involved. In the future, I would suggest that companies simply settle everything with the old show, ensuring everyone is compensated as per their contract, and just move on.”

Beadle also reflected on the experience during Wednesday’s program, admitting it felt a bit embarrassing to discover the news in such a manner. “I’ve been in this industry for over two decades, and I’ve certainly encountered awkward moments. But this—well, it just didn’t sit right with me,” Beadle admitted.

In a separate announcement, Smith revealed a multi-year deal with SiriusXM during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, stating he would start his new role in September.
