A popular radio host from Virginia is facing allegations of attempting to drive under the influence to a crime scene where police were investigating a shooting involving an officer.
Brandon Stokes, who goes by “Shaggy” on Z104 in Virginia Beach, reportedly displayed signs of intoxication while trying to access a restricted area that was cordoned off by law enforcement on Wednesday morning around 9:30 a.m.
This incident occurred while the Virginia Beach Police Department was actively investigating a separate officer-involved shooting that happened earlier that day.
The officer involved was reportedly shot at by an 18-year-old named Shawn Mahler, who allegedly attempted to break into a vehicle outside a daycare center before police intervened.
Mahler was said to have been brandishing a replica firearm, which prompted authorities to take action.
Stokes, aged 43, claimed he was allowed to drive as he owns a roller skating rink located close to where the shooting took place. Despite being repeatedly told by police that he could not enter the area, he insisted on approaching.
Witnesses reported that Stokes became visibly agitated, slurring his words and resisting police attempts to control the situation.
One officer detected a strong smell of alcohol, and Stokes consented to a breathalyzer test, which later indicated a blood alcohol level of 0.18—more than twice the legal limit in Virginia.
He was subsequently taken into custody.
Afterward, Stokes made a quick return to the airwaves, hosting his morning show the day following the incident. He casually commented on local weather via his Instagram story, assuring fans that he was fine despite the events that had transpired.
His post reassured listeners, stating, “Promise you all is well… I’m good. – happy Thursday.”
Stokes had previously worked with local law enforcement to promote a program assisting inmates in creating music, which makes this incident particularly surprising to many.
Meanwhile, Mahler, who is now in stable condition, is facing charges including multiple counts of assault against a law enforcement officer.
A community member expressed sorrow over Mahler’s actions, saying they hoped he would get help, as they believed he was simply struggling and not inherently bad.
