10 Android automations you can implement to save time today

Many users might be unaware that they can automate various tasks on their Android devices. These automations, once set up, can really save time and help streamline your daily routine. Though it may take some trial and error to find out what works best, there are currently ten useful automations you can try out.

Just a quick note: I’m using a Samsung Galaxy phone for these examples, so keep in mind that steps may vary slightly based on your phone’s manufacturer.

1. Schedule “Do Not Disturb” Mode

Do you have a structured work schedule? If so, automating your “Do Not Disturb” mode can help maintain your focus without interruptions. Here’s how you can set this up:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap on Modes and Routines.
  • Select Add a mode.
  • Name it Turn on DND and tap End.
  • Choose It will automatically turn on.
  • Set the time period for when you want it to activate and de-activate.
  • Finish up by tapping End.

2. Schedule Text Messages

Need to send a message later but worried you might forget? Android lets you schedule messages to be sent at a specific time. To do this:

  • Create your message in the Messages app.
  • Press and hold the Send button.
  • Select Schedule message from the menu.
  • Choose your desired date and time.

3. Silence Your Phone at Night

If you want a peaceful night’s sleep, setting up bedtime mode lets your phone silence notifications during those hours. Here’s how to establish that:

  • Head to Settings.
  • Select Modes and Routines.
  • Tap Sleep.
  • Activate It will automatically turn on.
  • Set your sleep schedule and adjust your alarm settings.

4. Enable Google Autofill

To save time filling out forms, enable Google Autofill. Here’s how you do it:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Google.
  • Tap All Services, then Autofill.
  • Toggle on Use Autofill on Google.

5. Automatic Battery Saving Mode

To extend battery life automatically, set your phone to switch to power saving mode when the battery gets low. You can configure this by:

  • Access Settings.
  • Click on Modes and Routines.
  • Set up a mode named Save Power.
  • Activate It will automatically turn on and set a time period for this mode.
  • Also, manage power-saving settings within that mode.

6. Limit App Usage During Work Hours

If social media or games distract you at work, you can block these apps automatically during work hours:

  • Navigate to Settings.
  • Go to Modes and Routines.
  • Create a mode like Working Block App.
  • Set the time frame when you want to restrict app usage.
  • In the mode’s settings, choose to Restrict app usage for specified apps.

7. Enable Dark Mode at Night

To reduce eye strain in low light, you can schedule dark mode:

  • Open Settings.
  • Click on Display or Screen.
  • Select Dark Mode Settings.
  • Set it to turn on automatically during specified night hours.

8. Wi-Fi Activation Based on Location

This feature helps in saving battery and enhancing security by turning Wi-Fi on when you’re home or at work. To enable it:

  • Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the three dots in the upper right corner.
  • Select Intelligent Wi-Fi.
  • Turn on Turn Wi-Fi on/off automatically.

9. Automatic Backup of Photos and Videos

To ensure your memories are safe, you can automate the backup of photos using Google Photos:

  • Open the Google Photos app.
  • Tap your profile icon.
  • Select Photo settings.
  • Enable the option for Back up photos and videos.

10. Autorotate for Specific Apps

If you want to enable autorotation just for specific media apps, like when watching videos, set it up by:

  • Heading to Settings > Modes and Routines.
  • Select Add a routine.
  • Create a routine that turns on auto-rotation when a certain app is opened.

Automation isn’t merely about convenience; it’s about fostering habits that enhance how your Android device serves you. Don’t hesitate to tailor these automations to suit your unique situations and needs.
