Trump Administration Approves Major Coal Mining Project After Delay

Department of the Interior Approves Coal Mining Plan

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced on Friday the approval of a plan that will facilitate the extraction of significant amounts of coal from mines in Montana.

This decision enables Signal Peak Energy, LLC to extract nearly 60 million tonnes of coal from the Bull Mountains mines, a move aligned with President Donald Trump’s declaration of a National Energy Emergency. The mining plan is not only expected to extend the life of the mine by nine years but is also anticipated to generate around $1 billion in profits and provide fuel to major allies, such as Japan and South Korea, as noted by the DOI.

“This is what energy leadership looks like,” commented Doug Burgham, the Secretary of the Interior. “By giving access to American coal, we’re fueling our efforts at home and strengthening ties with allies abroad. President Trump’s leadership in declaring a national energy emergency is crucial for our energy independence and strategic exports, which are essential for America’s future.”

The approved plan permits Signal Peak Energy, LLC to mine 22.8 million tonnes of coal, along with 34.5 million tonnes of adjacent non-seam coal for federal purposes. The DOI mentioned that the project currently employs about 250 workers at the site and is expected to boost both local and national economies.

In contrast, former President Joe Biden, in May 2024, moved to block new federal coal mining leases in the coal-rich zones of Montana and Wyoming. This action drew criticism from Republican Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, who condemned it as succumbing to the pressure from distant activists.

“Today’s approval of the permit for Signal Peak’s Bull Mountain Mine is a long-awaited victory for Montana coal miners,” stated Gianforte. “Under Biden’s administration, we’ve seen an all-out war on American energy, which has endangered jobs across the nation.”

Back in April, Trump issued a Presidential Order that revitalized the coal industry and exempted several coal-fired power plants from the regulatory changes introduced during Biden’s tenure.

“This decision signifies our commitment to balancing economic growth, national security, and environmental standards,” said Adam Seuss, acting vice-secretary of Land and Mineral Management. “The Bull Mountains Project demonstrates that we can address pressing energy needs while collaborating with local communities and upholding strong environmental practices.”

As of now, the DOI, as well as the Japanese and South Korean embassies and Signal Peak Energy, LLC, have not provided comments regarding this development.
