New rules from the Trump administration weaken Biden's car fuel efficiency standards

The Trump administration recently moved to weaken regulations established during the Biden era that aimed to enhance fuel economy for cars and trucks.

The Transportation Department has issued a statement interpreting rules related to the previous administration’s approach, suggesting that the Biden administration wrongly viewed electric vehicles as a means to boost fleet efficiency.

This interpretation doesn’t officially dismantle Biden’s rules, but it indicates that while the rulemaking process is being reactivated, enforcement of those earlier standards may be in jeopardy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted, “[The enforcement of] all existing … standards” will depend on the ongoing rulemaking process.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy accused the Biden administration of attempting to “order” a transition to electric vehicles in a recent statement.

Under Trump’s direction, Duffy emphasized a focus on making vehicles easier to produce in the U.S. at a lower cost. He contended that past administrations improperly leveraged Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to promote electric vehicles.

Biden’s administration had mandated that cars improve fuel efficiency by approximately 2% annually, while calling for up to a 10% increase for heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans from 2030 to 2032.

Trump has consistently critiqued these efforts, claiming they restrict consumer choice and could potentially lead to job losses in the automotive sector.

In contrast, Democrats argue that a shift toward electric vehicles will reduce air pollution and combat climate change, positioning the U.S. as a leader in emerging markets.

The timing of this new interpretation coincided with a notable disagreement between Trump and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla.

While the Transportation Department’s rules and stricter Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations regarding vehicle emissions have significantly influenced the market’s fuel efficiency, they remain unaffected for now by the Trump administration’s latest actions.

However, should the EPA regulations be altered, the department’s fuel economy rules will provide a fallback option. Republicans are currently pushing to dissolve those rules through significant legislation.
