Shaquille O’Neal Questions Jason Tatum’s Hall of Fame Credentials

Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t completely bought into Jason Tatum’s Hall of Fame resume just yet.

At 27, Tatum is an NBA champion with six All-Star appearances and five All-NBA selections. However, O’Neal seems uncertain whether those accomplishments ensure Tatum’s spot in the Hall of Fame.

On his podcast, “The Big Podcast,” Shaq didn’t seem particularly convinced as his co-host, Adam Lefkoe, made a case for Tatum’s Hall of Fame potential.

“He’s in an interesting spot—his resume is already Hall of Fame-worthy,” Lefkoe stated.

O’Neal went on to differentiate between a traditional basketball Hall of Fame and what he jokingly calls the “bad motherhooker hall of fame.” He included only a few active players, aside from LeBron James—an easy choice—like Steph Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic for the latter.

When looking at Tatum’s numbers, it seems he has a solid chance of creating a Hall of Fame resume during his first eight years in the league.

Tatum’s accomplishments, including his NBA title, All-Star selections, and All-NBA nods, speak volumes. Plus, he has an Olympic gold medal to his name, as Lefkoe highlighted.

There are several Hall of Fame players with resumes that align with Tatum’s. For instance, Grant Hill had seven All-Star selections and five All-NBA picks but never won an NBA championship. Similarly, Alonzo Mourning was a one-time champion with seven All-Star appearances and two All-NBA selections.

At this point in their careers, Tatum’s resume seems comparable to theirs on paper.

Still, Shaquille O’Neal, a Hall of Famer himself, wants to see more from Tatum.

Looking ahead, Tatum is expected to miss significant time next season due to an Achilles injury sustained in Game 4 of the second round against the Knicks.

When he returns, he’s likely to resume his All-Star and All-NBA form, which could make it increasingly hard for O’Neal to defend his cautious stance.
