Charges Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia
ABC News reports that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is currently facing criminal charges linked to human smuggling as he returns to the United States.
Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who had been previously deported, is accused of domestic abuse by his spouse and is suspected of having ties to the MS-13 gang. Now back in the U.S., he is allegedly involved in transporting undocumented immigrants across the country. This situation represents a significant win for Democrats, who are asserting their stance on reinstating Salvadoran individuals into the U.S.
In March, Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended Garcia and subsequently deported him to El Salvador, where he was sent to one of Central America’s largest prison facilities, notorious for housing gang members.
His deportation sparked outrage among Democrats, who argued it was unjust given prior protections against removal by immigration judges. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Garcia’s return, a sentiment echoed by a group of House Democrats who also showed their support.
Interestingly, the Trump administration cited a local law enforcement agency in Maryland in relation to his case, which links back to an earlier domestic abuse allegation involving his alleged gang affiliation and his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sula.
Garcia had previously drawn attention in Tennessee in 2022 when he was suspected of smuggling after being pulled over while transporting eight passengers who had no visible luggage. The car he was operating at the time belonged to a man who was himself an undocumented immigrant.
The Department of Homeland Security has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
This is an evolving story.
