France Hesitates Once More on Acknowledging 'Palestinian State'

France has tempered expectations regarding a swift recognition of a Palestinian state, emphasizing that any such action needs to hold more weight than being merely “symbolic.” The French foreign minister is, however, still intent on pursuing this possibility.

Later this month, France will co-host a UN conference in New York alongside Saudi Arabia, focusing on two-state resolutions to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

During this gathering, there’s hope that France may officially acknowledge the Palestinian state. President Emmanuel Macron appears increasingly frustrated with the aid efforts for Palestinians in Gaza.

“France could have opted for a symbolic move, but we decided against that due to our unique responsibilities,” he remarked, noting France’s role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. He reiterated that Paris remains committed to its stance.

He pointed out that France’s potential recognition of the Palestinian state is not merely based on enthusiasm but also considers its alignment with allies, especially Saudi Arabia’s acknowledgment of Israel.

Several EU nations, like Ireland, Spain, and Sweden, have recognized the Palestinian state. In contrast, Germany supports a two-state solution while cautioning against sending “the wrong signal.”

Interestingly, France is reportedly coordinating with the UK, which has not recognized the Palestinian state. Relations between France and the UK have become increasingly tense in the wake of Brexit.

Macron expressed optimism that the New York meeting will lead to developments regarding Palestinian recognition, although he was vague about what those actions might entail.

He asserted that France’s view on the Palestinian state could encourage other nations to follow suit and suggested that Israel should also consider this perspective.

Meanwhile, attention has been drawn to the urgent need to address disarmament concerning Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza.

The unprecedented assault by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,218 fatalities, according to AFP estimates based on official data.

The militants have taken 251 hostages, with 55 still believed to be in Gaza.

Israel’s retaliatory actions in Gaza have reportedly led to 54,677 deaths, primarily among civilians, according to the UN.

The relationship between Israel and France has soured in recent weeks, with the Israeli Foreign Ministry accusing Macron of conducting a “crusade against the Jewish states” after he urged European leaders to take a firmer stance if conditions in Gaza do not improve.
