Attack at Chevron Station in Marietta, Georgia
On Monday night, Teresa Maccas left the Chevron Station on Franklin Gateway in Marietta when a man approached her and struck her with a piece of metal from a bed frame, as reported by Waga-TV.
Authorities stated that both surveillance footage and witness accounts indicated the suspect was wandering near Maccas, who had parked her Chevrolet Aveo at the station.
After the attack, Maccas shouted, “Help! Help me!” and recounted wrestling with the assailant on the concrete while screaming for assistance, but noted that no one came to her aid.
About a minute later, Gary Edwards and his family, who were leaving a nearby restaurant, heard Maccas’s screams. “It was like a woman screaming bloody murder… I saw this guy hovering over her,” Gary reflected.
Without hesitation, he rushed to help, joined by Anna, his wife. Gary, now 66, later identified the attacker as 32-year-old Rico Riley from Smyrna.
Maccas will remember Gary’s urgent calls for help. “Then, I heard him shout, ‘I’m coming to help her now!'” she said.
They grappled on the ground, and Gary mentioned that he managed to knock Riley away.
Meanwhile, the suspect fled to a nearby intersection where he attempted to carjack another vehicle. Unfortunately, he targeted a couple with their 2-year-old child in a Toyota Rav4 stopped at the red light.
In a remarkable turn, Anna intervened. Gary stated, “She approached the side of the road and armed me with a gun. I confronted Riley as he tried to enter the passenger side.”
With the firearm aimed at him, Gary ordered Riley to the ground and kept him subdued until police arrived. “He was spread out on the ground, pleading for me to let him go,” Gary recalled with a hint of amusement.
After police took Riley into custody, he was secured at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. He is facing multiple charges, including attempted armed robbery and possession of cocaine, among others.
The timeline for Riley’s court appearance remains uncertain, and police did not provide any information regarding the victim’s condition.
