Marchand's goal in double overtime leads Panthers to victory against Oilers in Game 2

Marchand Leads Panthers to Overtime Victory

Brad Marchand had been denied a potential game-winning goal earlier, but he didn’t let that deter him. In a thrilling match on Friday night, the Florida Panthers clinched a double overtime victory over the Edmonton Oilers, thanks to a decisive goal from Marchand, ending the game 5-4 in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.

Edmonton initially took charge, scoring three goals in the first 12:37. But after that strong start, they struggled to score again. Facing a 4-3 deficit, the Oilers made a bold move by pulling their goalie, Stuart Skinner, with 2:33 left in regulation. It felt a bit premature, but they were taking a risk in hopes of turning the tide.

With just 17.8 seconds remaining, Corey Perry managed to level the score at four, finding an open path in front of the net. Notably, despite allowing goals on three of his first seven shots, Sergei Bobrovsky rallied, stopping the next 24 shots and sending the match into overtime.

Both teams had their chances during overtime, and the Panthers even hit the post at one point. Just eight minutes into the second overtime, Marchand seized an opportunity, scoring again despite Skinner’s effort to stop him, propelling Florida to a remarkable win.

The game began with swift scoring once more, echoing the first game. This time, however, Florida opened the scoring thanks to Sam Bennett just two minutes in, before Edmonton equalized through Ivan Kane shortly thereafter. The Oilers took advantage with a power play that briefly gave them a lead, but before long, the teams were neck and neck again, with five goals within the opening 13 minutes.

Though the Oilers’ offense fizzled out as the game went on, Florida’s tenacity continued. Dmitry Kulikov brought the Panthers level again, followed by Marchand’s shorthanded goal, which handed Florida a lead they would try to hang onto.

Marchand, who joined the Panthers in a highly talked-about trade during the deadline, undoubtedly proved his worth with this performance. Game 3 is set to take place on Monday night in Florida, continuing what has already been an intense championship series.
