Doris Burke Receives Support in Oklahoma City

Doris Burke has been on the receiving end of a lot of goodwill this weekend.

While attending the Texas Institute of Technology and Texas Women’s College World Series in Devon Park, Oklahoma City, Richard Jefferson showed his support for his broadcasting partner.

During the SEC Network pregame show, he donned a t-shirt that read, “My Favorite Station is Doris Burke.” There, he was interviewed by Hailey McCleney and others.

Jefferson and Burke are key figures in ESPN and ABC’s NBA coverage, with Burke serving as the lead analyst alongside Mike Breen.

Ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals featuring the Pacers and the Thunder on Thursday, reports from the Athletic suggested that Burke’s position next season isn’t secure.

This will mark Burke’s second time as ESPN’s lead analyst for the Finals.

Even with ESPN’s contract uncertainty, Jefferson clearly showed he’s got her back.

He was also spotted in the stands during a softball game, sitting next to Burke and once again wearing the supportive shirt.

Jefferson even pointed to his shirt for the camera before leaning toward her, prompting a smile and laughter from Burke in response.

But he’s not the only one defending Burke. Before Game 1, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle spoke up in her favor.

“I saw something leaked about Doris Burke yesterday, and I wanted to say a few things. She really changed the women’s game on air,” Carlisle stated.

He continued, “Doris is an incredible example of courage. It’s unfortunate to see such unnecessary reports come out before a significant event. She’s a friend, and I’ve reached out to her many times.”

After ESPN ended its partnerships with Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, Burke was elevated to the network’s top NBA broadcast team.

Since joining, she’s navigated through different analysts, resulting in a constant evolution of the panel.

Earlier this week, Burke appeared on ESPN Radio’s “Joe & Q,” where she expressed her gratitude for Carlisle’s defense.

“He reached out to me earlier in the day, and I try not to get emotional here,” she said. “He’s about to coach Game 1 of the Finals yet took the time to check in on me. He’s always been a big supporter, and that speaks volumes about him.”
