Jewish Donors Distance from Democrats Amid Protests

James Carville, a seasoned Democratic strategist, has commented on the ongoing Palestinian protests at Columbia University and suggested that some Jewish donors are reevaluating their support for the Democratic Party. He mentioned, “I’ve never seen Democrats dining with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes,” referring to controversies linked to individuals in the Republican Party.

Carville attributes this shift to a rise in anti-Semitism, particularly on university campuses, which he believes is influencing donors’ decisions. He remarked, “In my view, that doesn’t make sense. Can’t you be a Democrat just because they are protesting Biden? That’s nonsense.” He accused Jewish donors of leaning toward the GOP as a reaction to these protests.

The protests at Columbia have become a focal point for opposition to U.S. support for Israel amid the Gaza conflict. Students, who typically support Democratic candidates, expressed their disapproval of President Biden by chanting phrases like, “Genocide Joe has to go!” These protests also occurred during pivotal moments leading up to the last election.

Carville further emphasized the Democratic Party’s historical support for Israel, pointing out that figures like Harry Truman and Bill Clinton played key roles in its establishment and security. He questioned the motivations behind Jewish donors’ potential shift to the Republicans, citing the party’s ties to individuals with known anti-Semitic views.

He specifically criticized Trump’s associations, pointing out that it contrasts sharply with the Democratic Party’s stance on such issues. In his podcast, Carville articulated that Jewish donors picking Republicans, perhaps, is about tax benefits rather than genuine alignment on key issues.

Despite his critiques, the White House has not acknowledged Carville’s assertions about the Republican Party. Meanwhile, Trump has purportedly gained significant support from the Jewish community, especially as he positions himself against anti-Semitism.

Throughout the discourse, Carville has maintained that the issues surrounding the Columbia protests should not drive a wedge between Jewish donors and the Democratic Party.
