At least four individuals have lost their lives in eastern Ukraine, and over two dozen others, including a baby and a 14-year-old, have sustained injuries following a multifaceted attack involving drones, missiles, and bombs launched by Russia, as reported by Ukrainian officials.
On Saturday morning, Russia fired 215 missiles and drones at Kharkiv, which is the second-largest city in the war-impacted area. This resulted in the deaths of three people and left more than 40 others injured, according to Ukrainian sources. Later that day, another bomb was dropped in Kharkiv’s city center, killing at least one more person and injuring five others.
“The Russians seek the total annihilation of life,” declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following the assaults. He further lamented that after over 11 years of conflict, Russia has brought extensive devastation, describing it as an oppressive legacy of ruins and death. Zelensky emphasized the need to resist these aggressions and expressed gratitude for global support, noting that Russia appears poised to continue its onslaught while disregarding peace propositions.
Zelensky added that there’s an immediate need to bolster air defense capabilities, pointing out that they are still awaiting positive signals from the U.S. regarding the purchase of crucial defense systems. He also appreciated the added support from other European nations.
“Joint production of air defense systems and missiles is absolutely vital for all of Europe,” he remarked, stressing that time was a significant factor in achieving this goal.
In a poignant comment, Zelensky described the attacks as “pure terrorism,” revealing that civilians in cities are increasingly targeted without regard to military significance. He expressed concern about Russia’s growing sense of impunity in waging war.
In a related development, last Sunday, Ukraine conducted an unexpected drone assault on Russian territory. Zelensky noted that 117 drones were employed in this operation, which was said to be cloaked in secrecy next to a Russian intelligence agency office.
The previous Friday, another drone assault from Russia claimed six lives, including that of infants, and left around 80 people injured, again reported Ukrainian officials. This particular attack coincided with comments from former President Donald Trump regarding potential retaliations from Russian leadership.
Trump, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, remarked, “They gave Putin a reason to respond aggressively.” He had also previously likened the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to children squabbling, suggesting sometimes it’s better to let them fight it out before stepping in.
Both Ukraine and Russia have undertaken two rounds of peace discussions so far, but tangible results remain elusive.
