Biden’s Cognitive Health Under Scrutiny
In a recent interview, former President Barack Obama’s physician suggested that Joe Biden’s doctor should conduct cognitive tests to evaluate the current president’s mental fitness. Dr. Jeffrey Courman noted that Biden’s age warranted a thorough assessment.
Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who has been Biden’s doctor since 2009, reported in 2024 that the then 81-year-old president “continued to be fit for his duties,” but did not include cognitive testing in his report. Courman expressed concern, stating that sometimes those closest to a situation can overlook significant details.
“It should be fitness, not just health,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of a sharp mind and body for performing demanding roles.
On another note, former President Donald Trump responded to ongoing inquiries about Biden’s administration, expressing confusion about the circumstances surrounding Biden’s use of an autopen for signatures, which some suggest is an attempt to obscure cognitive decline.
Trump characterized this issue as potentially one of the most alarming scandals in American history, claiming it has been deliberately concealed from the public, leading to significant policy changes.
Biden countered, asserting that he made clear decisions throughout his presidency, from pardons to executive orders.
This situation becomes even more complex with the findings of special advisor Robert Huar’s investigation into classified documents from Biden’s vice presidency. The February 2024 report ultimately cleared Biden of any serious wrongdoing but pointed to instances where he struggled to recall significant events, including his son Beau’s death.
Recently, James Comer, the Chair of the House Oversight Committee, subpoenaed Dr. O’Connor to discuss Biden’s cognitive health, framing the investigation as a critical inquiry into the president’s overall mental and physical capability.
The committee’s interest in this issue isn’t limited to just Republicans. A book titled “Original Sin” by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson touches on Biden’s role, implying he was more of a supporting actor than a leader in vital decisions.
Naomi Biden, the former president’s granddaughter, dismissed the book as politically charged and not reflective of reality.
Comer is also seeking to interview several key figures from Biden’s administration, warning that subpoenas will follow if they do not comply voluntarily. It’s a developing situation that raises a lot of questions and perhaps more uncertainties about Biden’s tenure and health.
