Juan Soto’s Impact in Mets’ Victory
DENVER – The Mets showcased some impressive power on Sunday, notably from Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeill, each hitting two home runs. However, it was Juan Soto who quietly made a significant contribution in the Mets’ 13-5 win against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Soto managed to get on base six times—three singles and three walks—a feat the Mets hadn’t seen since Alonso did it on August 15, 2019.
“Whether it’s taking a walk or hitting the ball hard, I just try to help my team,” Soto commented.
His current stats show a .244/.384/.436 slash line. Not bad, yet it’s a bit below what many expected from him. Nevertheless, June has been promising for Soto with a 1.179 OPS across eight games.
After facing the Rockies, Soto was set to take on the Dodgers on Tuesday, returning home from a recent series in New York.
“I finally got some good pitches, made solid swings, and found gaps,” Soto said, reflecting on his recent improvements.
Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza praised Soto’s balanced performance. “Three singles and three walks is impressive, especially at this level. It’s great to see him finding success at the plate,” he stated.
Soto was on base during three different innings, while Alonso also made his mark, earning a home run in the eighth. Alonso praised Soto’s performance, saying, “He kept commanding the strike zone and hit the ball hard all over. It was a great day for him.”
Notably, Soto watched as Alonso moved up the Mets’ home run leaderboard, now second behind David Wright with 243 homers. Alonso has been on fire lately, belting five home runs over a recent road trip.
In Soto’s words, “He’s Pete. He’s an excellent hitter.”
