Board appointed by DeSantis prevents university president from implementing 'DEI 2.0'

University Dean Expelled After DEI Initiative Controversy

Ryan Walters from Oklahoma State and Bethany Mandel from Mama Wars have reacted to the recent expulsion of a student from her position at UNC Asheville. This incident arose following her support for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative.

In a broader context, the election of Santano to lead the University of Florida has had ramifications not just in that state but throughout the entirety of the higher education landscape in the U.S. It seems, in some ways, like our top universities have been stumbling backward into identity politics and leftist ideologies, which, ironically, have turned educational institutions into spaces that prioritize everything but education.

Ono, the former president of the University of Michigan, was perceived as a “moderate.” But many interpreted that term to mean someone who would embrace “DEI 2.0” from the start and label racism as one of America’s foundational issues.

The election process for the University of Florida’s presidency faced intense scrutiny due to Ono’s past support of DEI initiatives, highlighted in a strategic document designed to solidify DEI’s role in universities long-term.

Previously, as president of the University of British Columbia, Ono had established land acknowledgments and addressed systemic racial inequality within academia. Yet, his commitment seemed more aligned with leftist politics than genuine reform.

Just last month, he expressed dedication to fostering an environment of mutual respect and open dialogue at the University of Michigan. However, his tenure saw radical protests increasingly disrupt events, which raised questions about free speech on campus.

In a recent op-ed, he proclaimed understanding the value of public higher education and emphasized responsibilities towards academic excellence and intellectual diversity. However, this perspective appears to contradict his earlier actions, where he signed an anti-Trump letter amid campus pressures.

The decision to not appoint Ono has opened up discussions about his past political affiliations and their implications. Some believe that while people can evolve over time, the sudden shifts in Ono’s stance give reason to hesitate.

Success often draws multiple supporters. The unexpected rejection of Ono’s pick has led many individuals and groups to seek credibility in the aftermath. It’s acknowledged that the governor’s committee played a significant role in this outcome, reflecting a strong stance against candidates perceived to support controversial policies.

During the board’s discussions, questions arose regarding Ono’s handling of anti-Israel protests at the University of Michigan, where he seemed unprepared to justify his lack of action against campus disruptions. His promise to confront anti-Semitism raised eyebrows about whether he would uphold these principles if appointed.
