Interception of Activists’ Boat Near Gaza
On Monday, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) announced that they had intercepted a boat carrying Greta Samberg and other activists as it tried to approach the Gaza Strip. This attempt was part of a mission organized by the Pro-Palestine Group, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which had set sail from Sicily before being stopped by the IDF. Reports indicated that Israel had also intended for Samberg and her fellow activists to engage in a public statement, as noted by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.
Samberg’s profile has risen in recent years; she’s become a prominent climate activist and has recently defended her pro-Palestinian stance. In fact, she was named “Person of the Year” by Time Magazine in 2019 for her climate advocacy. Just before her detention, she recorded a message urging her supporters to pressure the Swedish government for her release and that of her companions.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they deemed the vessel a “selfie yacht” and called the mission a media stunt lacking genuine humanitarian assistance. While the activists claim that Israel is effectively suffocating Gaza, they assert the blockade has been stringent since 2007, aimed at preventing Hamas from receiving weapons and supplies.
The FFC maintained that their voyage was intended as a peace effort, claiming the ship was carrying essential items like baby formula and medical supplies. The interception occurred around 200 kilometers from the Gaza coastline, in international waters.
Both the FFC and the Israeli Ministry of Defense did not respond to requests for further comments about the incident.
