Incidents at Governor’s Ball Festival in Queens

Recent police and court documents indicate that a group of immigrant pickpockets was apprehended during the Governor’s Ball festival in Queens, but they have already been released back onto the streets.

The event, a three-day music festival at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, kicked off on Friday night amid reports of thefts. Vigilant police officers managed to identify and apprehend three Colombian immigrants.

The individuals arrested include Maritza Cortesparomo, 35, Windy Paola Mendoza Ekebary, 34, and Maria Mendoza, 30. Officials from the NYPD announced that they faced charges for fourth-degree grand larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Interestingly, Ekeberly was also charged with resisting arrest during the incident.

Reports suggest that NYPD Slim Corps officers, alongside Queens North Patrol Borough, were particularly busy, responding to a surge of thefts that ultimately led to the arrests on Friday night.

According to sources, one of the women had concealed four stolen cell phones in her waistband when officers caught up with her. Quite a bold move, really.

Court records reveal that all three women were jailed on Saturday and Sunday, yet were released without bail, pending court dates.

Upon being questioned, they claimed to reside in Florida, which might raise a few eyebrows.

Under recent state criminal justice reforms from 2019, the kinds of charges they faced do not qualify for bail, which is a point of contention in legal discussions.

Palomo and Mendoza are expected back in court on July 29th, while Ekeberly’s next appearance is scheduled for August 12th. It’s worth noting that just last year, a wave of asylum seekers reportedly complicated matters for the NYPD, leading to the identification of over 100 immigrant offenders, prompting the formation of a specialized task force to address emerging trends.
