NFL Rumblings: Jaire Alexander’s Release and Potential Destinations
It’s an odd moment in the NFL landscape, and the news surrounding it is, well, even weirder. The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with their all-pro cornerback, Jaire Alexander. Over the last few months, both sides have been, I guess, a bit at odds, and it’s surprising that they couldn’t find a trade partner.
Alexander was set to carry a hefty salary cap hit of $24.6 million this season thanks to a contract extension from 2022. However, since it’s a release rather than a trade now, his cap hit drops to $7.5 million, freeing up around $17 million for the Packers. This gives them flexibility to either pursue another player, perhaps Jalen Ramsey?—or to simply stash some cash for future seasons.
The connection between Alexander and the Packers has been strained, primarily due to a sequence of frustrating injuries that have sidelined him for most of the last two years. He made the All-Pro second team in 2020 and 2022, but really, he’s only suited up for 14 games over the past two years. His injury woes have included issues with his back, shoulders, quadriceps, and knees. It’s been a rough stretch, especially when he seemed so determined to work things out with team officials in 2023.
There were attempts from both Alexander and the Packers to revise the contract. They wanted to tweak some of the guaranteed money and turn parts of his salary into performance-based incentives. But that plan didn’t pan out, leaving Alexander on the hunt for a new team.
Despite his injury history, it’s unlikely he’ll be a free agent for too long. A cornerback of Alexander’s talent doesn’t come around every day, especially not before training camp kicks off.
Detroit Lions
Do the Lions actually need more cornerbacks? Well, not exactly. But given their available cap space, they should at least consider everyone on the market.
Detroit is in a promising position to potentially sign Alexander. They could bolster their defensive backfield alongside Tereon Arnold, DJ Reed, and—of course—Jaire Alexander.
Even if Alexander can only manage 7-10 games this coming season, it might be worth taking a chance and hoping for the best.
Minnesota Vikings
Staying in the NFC North, here’s another team in need of cornerback help. The Vikings surprisingly opted not to address this during the 2025 NFL Draft, and they’re now facing a significant issue with this position, especially given the caliber of the passing game in their division.
There were thoughts that the Vikings might get involved in a trade for Jalen Ramsey, but if that falls through, pursuing Alexander could be a more realistic—and necessary—option for them.
This is a pressing need for Minnesota this season. Sure, injuries can be a concern, but the situation demands action, as their cornerback room is pretty thin right now.
New York Jets
Brandon Stevens isn’t exactly a top-tier starter at cornerback for the Jets. They’re seemingly just searching for any warm body to join Sauce Gardner, hoping that’ll suffice. However, that shouldn’t stop them from aiming for a significant upgrade, especially with their cap flexibility.
I find this intriguing because I believe Aaron Glenn could really motivate Alexander. He’s the kind of player coach who can inspire him to return to form. While injuries can’t be controlled, this move could fulfill a significant need.
Philadelphia Eagles
Let’s not forget the appeal of playing with a champion. But here’s the catch: Philadelphia isn’t desperate for cornerbacks. Both Quy Nhon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have performed well, while Kelly Ringo has shown potential. Yet, Ringo only played 113 snaps last season, so it’s uncertain how reliable he’ll be.
Nevertheless, Alexander could serve as a backup plan if Ringo doesn’t meet expectations, plus it would allow for some interesting rotations in their defense. It seems like a typical Eagles move to land him on a budget with performance incentives.
Las Vegas Raiders
Can anyone name a starting cornerback for the Raiders? Seriously, just one? I mean, if you said Jakorian Bennett and Eric Stokes, you’d get a prize—though it wouldn’t be a good one. Those guys aren’t starting material for most teams!
Neither of them is set for top-tier play, so it’s clear the Raiders need to shake things up to start this new era right. They should be scouring the market for upgrades everywhere they can.
Los Angeles Rams
I half-expect the Rams to address their cornerback needs either via Jalen Ramsey’s trade or by waiting for the Dolphins to let him go. But if that doesn’t pan out, Alexander could be a solid backup plan.
Upgrading their cornerback position is a clear offseason priority for Los Angeles. Right now, they’re looking at Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon, which, frankly, isn’t inspiring at all.
Making a move for Alexander might just be the answer they need if the Dolphins play hardball.
