Los Angeles Anti-ICE Riot Drawing Attention

A Los Angeles news station gained attention after anchors described an anti-ICE protest as “a bunch of people enjoying watching cars.” This comment didn’t sit well with many, especially given the escalating violence.

During live coverage, ABC7 Los Angeles anchor Jollyland warned that law enforcement’s involvement could inflame tensions further. “It becomes very unstable if the wrong moves are made,” he noted, referring to the chaos around burning vehicles and clashes between protesters and police.

Tim Caputo, reporting from the scene, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the precarious balance police needed to maintain while trying to manage the excited crowd. He pointed out the “fine lines” they had to walk in order to keep the peace.

In the midst of the chaos, reports indicated that small groups were responsible for most of the violence, contrasting with the larger crowd that primarily wanted to express their views peacefully. Caputo suggested that despite a few troublemakers, the majority of attendees appeared to be there to voice their opinions and make their presence felt. “It’s hard to label everyone as disruptors,” he remarked.

As tensions rose on June 8, 2025, protesters clashed with police, who responded to riots that began on Friday night, ignited by actions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Notably, vehicles were set ablaze, leading to aggressive exchanges between protesters and law enforcement.

Caputo expressed his hesitations about labeling the situation as a full-blown riot. “It seems a bit much, especially since there are many who are just filming and waving flags,” he said. He highlighted that while some individuals escalated tensions, they didn’t represent the crowd in its entirety.

Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass voiced their objections to President Trump’s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops in response to the unrest. They maintained that local law enforcement was capable of handling the situation without outside intervention.

As the protests continued, the narrative around them remained complicated. Reflecting on the events, one anchor remarked that if it weren’t for the flames, the protest might have looked relatively calm.
