Traveling passengers share surprising actions in the oddest situations they've encountered.

A recent post on Reddit’s “R/Delta” sparked quite a discussion, with one user asking, “What’s the strangest thing that’s happened to you on a plane?” The inquiry has attracted around 2,000 replies.

Users began sharing their own bizarre experiences, including photos of fellow passengers in window seats playing wooden recorders. One commenter recalled a “wonderful gentleman” who entertained the entire cabin with his playing during the landing phase. “I’m really glad he waited until the end of the flight,” they noted, declaring it the “absolute strangest thing” they’d witnessed aboard an aircraft.

As the conversation continued, other Redditors chimed in with their own unusual tales from 30,000 feet. One user recounted being stuck between two seats next to a young woman with a nearly life-sized doll featuring messy hair. “Trust me, she wasn’t a hairdresser,” they added wryly.

Another user mentioned their discomfort with people clipping their toenails mid-flight, having witnessed it three times. Someone else humorously noted a woman who managed to store her drink in an overhead compartment, which was notably loose. One user vividly described seeing a fellow passenger eating spaghetti and meatballs straight from a plastic takeout bag, clearly in a rush.

Further down the thread, another traveler recounted an encounter with an engaging but incessant elderly gentleman who wouldn’t stop asking questions, despite repeated attempts to indicate they were busy. “I even had my headphones on!” they exclaimed.

In another amusing anecdote, a passenger began flossing his teeth right after the meal, as if he were performing a dental procedure in the air. And then there was the unforgettable moment when someone changed a baby’s diaper on the seatback table, resulting in a lingering unpleasant odor for the rest of the flight.

The post even featured a baffling tale of a Donald Trump impersonator causing a double-take from a fellow passenger.

Travel industry expert Gary Leff highlighted the need for passengers to be mindful of others on flights. “Passengers have a personal space zone, roughly corresponding to their seating area,” he explained. While some behaviors might be seen as questionable, he emphasized that discretion is key.

Jacqueline Whitmore, a former flight attendant and etiquette expert, offered insights on maintaining proper decorum on flights. She pointed out that, even as seats grow smaller, it’s crucial not to encroach on another’s space. As for those who prefer to go shoe-less, she recommended wearing socks, noting that walking barefoot in public areas can spread bacteria.

Leff also made a broader observation about the democratization of air travel, which has led to a mix of diverse individuals with varying habits in a confined space. “Air travel brings together all kinds of people during stressful times, whether they’re visiting family or dealing with other personal issues,” he remarked, touching on the sometimes unpredictable behaviors that can arise in such environments.

“Humans can be quite strange,” he concluded, reflecting on the myriad of quirks encountered at 30,000 feet.
