Los Angeles Mayor Responds to Riots
Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles addressed the recent riots during an interview with CNN, featuring Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown. She mentioned that the National Guard wasn’t necessary to manage the unrest, particularly as footage of the riots played while she spoke.
Earlier, President Donald Trump had ordered the National Guard to be deployed to Los Angeles following an incident involving the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Bass criticized the decision, suggesting that the situation didn’t require military intervention, particularly as images of Trump’s actions were displayed next to her during the broadcast.
“I don’t believe we need the National Guard at this moment. The situation in Los Angeles feels stable,” she stated, referencing a video that indicated a single fire as police patrols were present. Bass expressed her sorrow over the vandalism, particularly graffiti in downtown, but clarified that it was more localized and not indicative of citywide chaos.
Social media posted video evidence of an individual wearing a motorcycle helmet throwing rocks at a car, which included an ICE agent. Authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin shared footage showing ICE agents being targeted during the unrest. He also posted additional clips and images revealing significant damage to a vehicle’s windshield from thrown rocks, along with injuries sustained by an ICE agent.
During a press conference on Sunday, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McConnell elaborated on the violent confrontations with officers, as reported by ABC7. “Last night, someone shot commercial-grade fireworks at our officers, which can be deadly,” McConnell noted.
