Union leader facing charges following arrest during ICE operation

David Fuerta, a California union leader, faces federal charges for allegedly trying to obstruct law enforcement during a protest against federal immigration actions. His arrest occurred on Friday while he was demonstrating against these policies.

Fuerta, who leads the California Department of Services’ United Nations (SEIU), is currently detained and is set for a bond hearing on Monday afternoon.

According to a court affidavit submitted by Homeland Security agents, he was involved in actions meant to hinder officers executing a search warrant at a facility in Los Angeles. It appears that he took various measures to “disrupt the operation” related to individuals entering the United States.

Witnesses reported that Fuerta sat at the gate, paced around, and refused to clear the area despite requests from authorities.

At one point, as a law enforcement van with its sirens on approached, he allegedly “refused to leave the road,” instead positioning himself defiantly in front of the vehicle.

Federal agents recounted that an officer tried to assist Fuerta in moving aside by laying a hand on him, but Fuerta reportedly pushed back. In response, the officer detained him and placed him under arrest.

This incident led to a backlash from Democratic lawmakers.

California Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, sent a letter on Monday asking for clarification from several officials in the Trump administration. They voiced concerns over the treatment of individuals exercising their legal rights while observing immigration enforcement actions.

The letter expressed, “It’s concerning to see U.S. citizens, union leaders, and community advocates continue to be detained for simply exercising their rights.” They emphasized their pride in representing citizens like Fuerta, who play vital roles in their communities.

Additionally, Rep. Maxine Waters attempted to visit Fuerta at the federal detention center on Sunday but was denied entry, as reported by CNN.

Meanwhile, SEIU members staged rallies in several cities on Monday to support Fuerta. The California Union Branch stated that Fuerta was hurt during his arrest while documenting law enforcement activities, reaffirming their commitment to standing against injustice.

They expressed pride in Fuerta’s efforts to advocate for migrant workers and uphold community values, insisting they will confront injustice no matter the personal risks involved.
