Protests Erupt in Los Angeles Amid Ongoing Tensions

LOS ANGELES – A crowd gathered around an American flag, chanting “burnout,” as the city experienced its fourth day of what could be described as violent protests.

On Monday, images circulated showing scenes of chaos, with individuals looting businesses and launching bricks, scooters, and other objects at officers from highway overpasses.

Many residents are becoming increasingly frustrated with what they see as rampant anti-American sentiment.

“Everything happening is quite concerning,” said Maria Favila, who owns a Mexican dress shop near the epicenter of recent looting incidents. She added that she’s been holding onto customer deposits for dresses and suits, fearing people might be reluctant to visit her shop.

The unrest began on Friday when immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) authorities conducted raids across the city, apprehending over 100 undocumented immigrants. This prompted a large demonstration, with hundreds waving anti-ICE signs and Mexican flags, clashing with law enforcement.

As protests unfolded, chaos erupted particularly in downtown LA and neighboring Compton and Paramount over the weekend. Videos captured rioters vandalizing cars and businesses, resulting in widespread destruction.

A source familiar with the situation noted that protesters were targeting what they termed “real criminals”—sex offenders and terrorists—suggesting that many were unaware of the backgrounds of those arrested.

Thousands poured into the streets of downtown Los Angeles during the weekend, with some groups reportedly linked to political factions, including ties to the Democrats and even the Chinese Communist Party.

One video from a Sunday night incident showed a mob burning an American flag and a man with a megaphone rallying them.

“This is more than just a symbol; it’s about authenticity. We must dismantle this empire thoroughly,” he proclaimed to the crowd.

Destruction was rampant, as looters targeted businesses such as Foot Locker and T-Mobile, stripping them of merchandise in broad daylight. Eyewitness accounts highlight the utter lawlessness as gangs brazenly commandeered stores.

Pedro Perez, an employee at a Boost Mobile location, expressed his dismay at the vandalism, stating, “This kind of behavior doesn’t help anyone. Most of the owners here are from our community.” He highlighted the contradiction of protesting for unity while damaging local businesses.

Responses from locals were mixed. Some criticized former President Trump for the current unrest, although they acknowledged that the violence only exacerbates the situation. Earlier on Sunday, anti-ICE protesters took over the 101 highway in LA, prompting a heavy police response.

After briefly shutting down the highway, it was closed again later that evening due to rioters throwing objects and damaging police vehicles. In light of escalating violence, President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, with 700 active-duty Marines dispatched shortly after.

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom indicated plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the National Guard’s deployment, while former ICE official Tom Homan challenged Newsom publicly.

Homan stated that the raids instigating the unrest were focused not just on immigration but were part of a broader criminal investigation targeting money laundering and fraud.

Despite the turmoil, ICE operations continued in Southern California, with authorities vowing to maintain their presence. The Justice Department also affirmed its commitment to prosecuting anyone found breaking federal laws as it investigates the various incidents related to the protests.
