Kirk Cousins is still with the Falcons, and it seems like he’s planning to show up for work.
Atlanta expects him to be present for the mandatory three-day minicamp starting Tuesday, as reported by Dianna Russini from Athletic.
Although the veteran quarterback is just one year into a four-year, $180 million deal signed in 2024, trade speculation is buzzing around him. This is partly due to the rise of second-year QB Michael Penix Jr. in the mix.
The 36-year-old Cousins remains under contract with the Falcons. If he chooses not to attend the minicamp while awaiting a potential trade, he risks facing fines.
Last season was tough for Cousins in Atlanta. He threw for 3,508 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. After the Falcons dropped four of their last five games, he ended the season on the bench following some disappointing performances.
As the Falcons were still in the playoff hunt, Penix Jr., the first-round pick from 2024, took over the offensive reins. He made his debut against the Giants on December 22nd, leading the Falcons to a decisive 34-7 win. Unfortunately, Cousins didn’t play again, and the Falcons missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record.
In March, Cousins had a meeting with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, expressing his desire to start in the upcoming season.
Many assumed Atlanta might cut Cousins at the end of the last season, but that didn’t happen. One reason for this hesitation is the hefty $40 million dead cap hit involved.
Thus, trading seems to be the only viable option. The question now is who might be interested in acquiring him.
The Steelers recently secured a quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, which limits available options further.
An intriguing possibility for a trade could be the Vikings, Cousins’ former team.
With JJ McCarthy recovering from knee surgery, the Vikings may seek a proven backup quarterback, especially if they feel their second-year player isn’t ready for the season opener.
Currently, Sam Howell and Brett Lipien serve as backup options behind McCarthy.
