Caution to couples who engage in intimacy less than weekly as study reveals significant risks.

A Caution for Couples Who Have Infrequent Sex

There’s now a cautionary note for couples engaging in sexual activity less than once a week. A recent study has shed light on the connection between sexual frequency and relationship happiness.

Honestly, there’s really no set rule about how often couples should be intimate. I guess, it’s all about what works for you, right?

Various research projects have investigated how sexual frequency influences factors like overall happiness in a relationship. Let’s not forget, some studies have even explored what could be considered “too much” intimacy.

According to a new study published in the International Journal of Sexual Health, it was found that 85% of women who have sex weekly reported being ‘sexually satisfied’.

Researchers surveyed 500 heterosexual women, revealing that about 66% of those having sex once a month felt less happy in their relationships.

Interestingly, the study noted that women aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to express satisfaction. However, a limitation of the research was the inability to confirm whether participants were completely honest in their responses.

Alexandra Janssen from The University of Manchester pointed out, “This research emphasizes that the widespread cultural focus on orgasm as the ultimate goal of sex can create unnecessary pressure and anxiety when it doesn’t occur. It’s important to recognize that not achieving orgasm every time is normal and may even have its advantages.”

Moreover, another study explored how often we should engage in sexual activity to reduce the risk of depression. It appears that having sex once or twice a week is beneficial.

This effect seemed to be particularly pronounced among participants aged 20 to 30, according to reports. The release of hormones like endorphins and dopamine during sexual activity is thought to play a key role in alleviating depressive symptoms.

Experts from Shantou University Medical College in China concluded that a frequency of one to two times per week showed the most protective benefits for psychological wellness. They suggested this could serve as a standard for monitoring mental health during treatment for depression.

Nonetheless, they noted that further studies are necessary to explore the directionality, causality, and possible modifiers of this relationship.

Mutong Chen, a co-author of the study, remarked, “Regardless of sexual orientation, engaging in sexual activity provides benefits like improved wellbeing and quality of life, significantly influencing mental health.”
