Eleanor Holmes Norton Plans Reelection Bid for 2026

The long-serving Democratic representative from Washington, D.C., Eleanor Holmes Norton, announced on Tuesday that she intends to run for reelection in 2026. Norton, who celebrated her 88th birthday recently, responded positively when asked about her plans, saying, “Yeah, certainly.” She seemed unfazed when questioned about her ability to serve in Congress at her age, retorting, “No one knows why they’re asking me.”

Norton’s remarks come amid concerns regarding her age and effectiveness in Congress, as recent reports have cast doubt on whether she can continue her duties effectively. While some may express skepticism, she maintains confidence in her abilities.

Having served as a non-voting representative since 1991, Norton has a lengthy history in political advocacy. Before her tenure in Congress, she was appointed by former President Jimmy Carter as the first woman to lead the U.S. Employment Opportunity Committee. In a statement, she expressed pride in her career, saying, “I am honored to have a long and successful career defending the rights of DC residents who have accepted me as a warrior on the hill.” Norton is currently in talks with close friends and advisors regarding her strategies for the upcoming election cycle.

“But there’s one simple response for those who question their ability to continue serving effectively. My record speaks for itself,” she added, emphasizing her commitment to her role.
