Chipotle’s AI-Driven Growth Strategy

Scott Boatwright, the CEO, mentioned that artificial intelligence is playing a significant role in the rapid expansion of Chipotle.

Speaking at Fortune’s COO summit, he announced that the company plans to open a new Chipotle restaurant nearly every day this year.

“Considering the growth we foresee and the necessity for skilled, purpose-driven individuals, attracting such talent is probably more essential than ever for us,” he added.

Reports indicate that the AI-driven Ava Cado Hiring Tool is streamlining the hiring process at Chipotle, cutting down the time needed to hire about 75% of new staff.

Ava Cado is part of an AI recruitment initiative that Chipotle launched in October 2024 in collaboration with Paradox. This tool is capable of conversing with candidates, answering questions about Chipotle, collecting basic information, scheduling interviews with managers, and sending out job offers.

Boatwright noted that this tool “not only helps maintain staffing levels but also ensures we have access to the best talent in the industry.”

During the summit, he remarked that rather than taking jobs away from people, AI seems to be designed to “eliminate inefficiencies and enhance the roles of team members.”

At Chipotle, AI also plays a role in attracting customers through reward programs and tailoring offers based on individual preferences.

As of the end of March, Chipotle boasted nearly 3,800 employees globally, with about 3,700 based in the U.S., according to the company’s first-quarter revenue report.

Looking ahead, Chipotle aims to open between 315 and 345 new locations in 2025, with Boatwright stating that 80% of these will feature the Chipotle Drive-Thru for pickup.

In its first quarter, Chipotle reported approximately $2.9 billion in revenue, reflecting a 6.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the net profit rose to $386.6 million.

Financial results for the second quarter are anticipated to be released in July.
