President Donald Trump spoke with Fox News about his recent conversation with Governor Gavin Newsom, refuting the governor’s claim that Trump hadn’t called him. They reportedly talked for around 16 minutes on Saturday.
On his journey to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Trump mentioned that although Newsom didn’t reach out initially over the weekend, their call took place later. “I told him to get things in gear and to put a stop to the riots,” Trump recounted. “Honestly, this just proves he’s lying. He said I never called him.”
Trump even shared a screenshot showing he called at 1:23 AM on June 7.
White House communications director Stephen Chen added to the discussion, reiterating Trump’s message to Newsom to take action against the riots. “Clearly, the governor has chosen to ignore the violence instead of taking care of Californians,” Chen stated.
Earlier, during an event addressing wildfire response, Trump faced questions from the media regarding ongoing protests connected to recent anti-ICE actions in Los Angeles. “I called him yesterday. He could’ve done a much better job. It was a bad performance,” Trump asserted.
In response, Newsom tweeted that he hadn’t received a call or any voicemails from Trump.
“There were no calls, no messages. Americans should be cautious since the president has Marines on our streets while not even knowing who he’s in contact with,” Newsom remarked.
The dispute escalated past three days, and during a press briefing, Newsom reiterated that Trump had reached out recently.
A spokesperson for Newsom confirmed to the Sacramento Bee that there were indeed no missed calls or voicemails from Trump.
Los Angeles had erupted into violent protests after federal immigration agents conducted operations in the city targeting undocumented immigrants. Local leaders, including Mayor Karen Bass, quickly condemned the federal action, expressing support for immigration policies.
The protests turned chaotic as demonstrators targeted federal law enforcement personnel.
Trump confirmed on Saturday that he’s deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to address the disturbances. Additionally, he mobilized hundreds of Marines to manage the escalating violence.
“If you had sent troops to Los Angeles over the last few nights, it would have been a once beautiful city now burning to the ground,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
