Rising Tensions Amid Federal Raids in Democratic Cities
The Ice Tactics Unit is preparing to conduct operations in five cities led by Democratic mayors, with California Governor Gavin Newsom expressing his anger toward President Trump for what he calls the “reckless deployment of the US military” in Los Angeles.
The tactical units will be sent to New York City, Philadelphia, Northern Virginia, Chicago, and Seattle, as reported by MSNBC. However, there’s no word yet on when these deployments will happen.
In downtown Los Angeles, protests sparked chaos over the past five days, developing into full-scale riots. The situation escalated further on Saturday when the Trump administration dispatched the National Guard and Marines to restore order.
City Mayor Karen Bass has imposed a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM in response to the unrest.
News outlets have criticized Trump in light of his recent emotionally charged speech, likening his actions to those of an “authoritarian” regime. Newsom described Trump’s order to deploy 2,000 state security personnel without consulting local law enforcement as “unlawful and unnecessary.”
“This president’s abuse of power is endangering our communities and police,” Newsom said, specifically condemning the use of “more than 700 active Marines” in the city, noting they are not intended for domestic law enforcement.
He expressed concern about the militarization of California’s cities, asserting that it goes against the state’s values. Newsom emphasized that safety is eroded when people face detention based solely on suspicion or appearance, warning that authoritarianism often targets vulnerable populations first.
He believes California may be experiencing these challenges first, but other states will likely follow suit. Newsom accused Trump of dismantling foundational democratic principles, saying, “There’s no longer a check and a balance.” He pointed to Congress’s failure to maintain its responsibilities as a sign of declining rule of law.
Newsom’s speeches have mostly focused on attacking Trump while advising protesters to avoid violence. He noted that authorities had arrested over 370 individuals for criminal activities during the protests and that efforts are being made to hold offenders accountable.
As tensions rise in Los Angeles, clashes between protesters and police have been reported, with both Newsom and Trump exchanging criticisms over the escalating violence. Other cities across the U.S. are showing increasing unrest, with anti-ICE demonstrations growing in cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.
In New York, thousands gathered near Foley Square on Tuesday, protesting ongoing deportation efforts. By nightfall, more than 80 people were arrested by the NYPD in various downtown locations.
Chicago also witnessed thousands marching downtown, leading to confrontations with law enforcement and several arrests. In San Francisco, clashes between police and protesters resulted in injuries to officers and over 100 arrests.
