Ex-migrant shelter leader requests AG Bondi to look into reports of widespread abuse

The former director of an immigration shelter in Massachusetts is urging Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice to investigate alarming trends related to crime, sexual assault, and financial exploitation in the nation’s immigration shelter system.

John Featherton, once in charge of the Marlborough shelter, was the first to expose the extensive issues plaguing the system after a Haitian immigrant, Ronald Joseph, living there, was discovered to have repeatedly assaulted his 13-year-old daughter.

Featherton recounted his shock upon learning that Joseph had lost custody of his daughter, saying that Joseph reacted with extreme aggression and distress towards him. Despite the gravity of the situation, Featherton was told to transfer Joseph to a different shelter in Worcester County, and it was only eight months later that Joseph was finally arrested.

He emphasized that such incidents are not rare and noted a broader trend of unreported violence, drug trafficking, and sex crimes within the Massachusetts shelter system, where many cases simply slip through the cracks.

In a letter to Bondi, Featherton declared, “This is not an isolated incident.” He expressed frustration over a “deliberate wall of silence” that has led to a lack of reform or accountability. “This is a crisis that necessitates immediate federal action,” he added, urging for a thorough examination of criminal activities and violence in the Massachusetts immigration shelters.

Featherton criticized the shelter system under Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy’s administration, insisting that it has created an environment ripe for mismanagement and abuse. He has witnessed traumatic events, including violence and fraud, with minimal intervention from state authorities.

According to him, the lack of communication from the Healy administration has seriously impacted both residents of the shelters and the communities surrounding them. “The family was placed in overcrowded and poorly monitored facilities,” he explained, which led to a rise in crime and fear in the neighborhood.

Moreover, Featherton alleged that he faced retaliation for speaking out, such as threats to his safety and public discreditation. “This culture of silence fosters a dangerous atmosphere where truth remains hidden and accountability is absent,” he said.

Governor Healy’s office has not yet responded to inquiries about this situation. Previously, Healy expressed outrage and called for an audit of the shelter system after an incident where an illegal immigrant was found storing significant amounts of illegal drugs and firearms in a shelter.
