WTA Introduces New Ranking Protections for Female Athletes

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced an important initiative aimed at supporting women tennis players undergoing fertility treatments. Starting Wednesday, the WTA will safeguard the rankings of players who opt for fertility protection measures, such as egg and embryo freezing, during their time away from competition.

This new player-led policy permits female athletes to utilize Special Entry Rankings (SERs) for up to three tournaments while they’re focusing on fertility-related procedures. The organization expressed that, “By introducing this new form of ranking protection, the WTA will help female athletes support and empower them to plan and launch professional sports careers and families at their chosen time.”

Furthermore, this update integrates into the existing WTA Family Focus program, which offers ranking safeguards during pregnancy and additional parental support. Earlier in the year, the WTA also committed to granting 12 months of paid maternity leave for players.

Sloane Stephens, a 2017 U.S. Open champion, emphasized the significance of infertility treatment for women in sports, stating, “Our sports are extremely proud to recognize the importance of infertility treatment for female athletes.”

Stephens shared her personal experiences with the challenges posed by earlier regulations: “The first time I did it, I rushed back and I was overweight, not happy, and very stressed. The second time I did that, I took a completely different approach.”

She pointed out that family life and career discussions are often quite intricate. By implementing these changes, the WTA aims to create a more accommodating space for athletes, allowing them to navigate their options regarding health and family planning without undue pressure.

Overall, this new ranking protection reflects an important step towards ensuring that female athletes can balance their professional and personal lives more effectively. It’s reassuring to see the sports community recognizing and valuing these critical issues.
