Mayor Adams criticizes NYC Council's effort to investigate NYPD for supposed violations of sanctuary city policies

Mayor Points to Crime Focus Amid NYPD Sanctuary Law Scrutiny

Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the need to concentrate on serious crimes rather than the ongoing push for city council members to investigate the NYPD for potential breaches of the sanctuary law.

This week, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Oversight Chair Gale Brewer sent a letter to the Department of Investigation, which accused the NYPD of providing information to federal authorities relating to a civil immigration case.

“We’ve made our stance clear repeatedly—we won’t cooperate with any agency regarding civil enforcement,” Adams stated during an interview.

The sanctuary city policy aims to restrict how the city collaborates with federal authorities, particularly regarding immigration enforcement against citizens.

While the NYPD is permitted to engage with federal entities in criminal investigations, the council members argue that the information gained is being misused to deport individuals who are not facing criminal charges.

In a letter reported by the city, council members suggested that following a significant corruption issue involving Adams, he may yield to the Trump administration regarding immigration enforcement practices.

The letter suggested that the push for this investigation reflects a broader political undercurrent, hinting at the Trump administration’s attempt to secure Adams’s compliance in immigration matters.

Despite these allegations, Adams indicated that any charges brought against him were dismissed due to perceived bias.

In response to an interview with Adams, Council member Rendy Desamours reiterated the frustrations of the council.

“We’ve seen the mayor hesitate to confront Trump and ICE overreach here,” he expressed. “These are ongoing cases that the NYPD is aware of, but the public remains in the dark. The council is advocating for an independent probe to rebuild trust that has been eroded by recent events.”

The NYPD reaffirmed on Wednesday its position that it does not participate in enforcing civil immigration policies.

A police spokesperson mentioned, “For many years, the NYPD has collaborated with various law enforcement agencies on criminal investigations, crucial for removing dangerous individuals from our communities and safeguarding our families.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish echoed these sentiments, stating, “We will continue to work with federal partners on criminal matters, but immigration statuses are not tracked by us, and the law doesn’t allow for our participation in civil immigration enforcement.”
