Jets Defensive Coordinator Challenges Sauce Gardner
After being hired as the new defensive coordinator for the Jets, Steve Wilkes posed a challenge to cornerback Sauce Gardner during their first meeting.
“He has already proven himself as a Pro Bowl player,” Wilkes stated. “I want to see if he can elevate his game even further. That was something I brought up right away in our conversation; I believe in his potential.”
Wilkes noted Gardner’s significant talent, but also emphasized, “Sometimes, your greatest strength can also be your biggest weakness. He’s incredibly competitive, and while he might be at 85% effort, that still puts him ahead of many others. This is where he needs to improve.”
Gardner has made quite an impact in his first two seasons, earning All-Pro honors. However, his performance waned somewhat last year. As he becomes eligible for a contract extension, the Jets are faced with a crucial decision about investing in their standout cornerback, especially given a critique of his fewer interceptions over his career.
Over the past three years, Gardner has only recorded three interceptions, including one last season. Wilkes mentioned that Gardner is actively working on his catching ability.
“He’s committed to improving,” Wilkes said. “I spend time with him on simple drills, like using a jug machine to help him understand different catching techniques—aligning his body to the ball, just like receivers do. At the end of the day, he’ll be as good as the players surrounding him, so we need to ensure we’re all aligned and pushing forward together, particularly in the secondary.”
Other Injury Updates
Wide receiver Malachi Corley missed practice again on Wednesday due to an undisclosed injury. This absence could undermine his chances in a competitive receiver lineup.
Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand expressed that Corley needs to catch up ahead of training camp. “It’s important for him to identify how he can make the most of this spring and get back on track,” Engstrand said. “Others have been getting valuable practice time, and he needs to be physically prepared to compete.”
Additionally, rookie wide receiver Ariane Smith was also absent from practice on Wednesday. Linebacker Quincy Williams, while dressed for practice, did not take part in team drills.
Quarterback Justin Fields shared that he intends to train alongside the wide receivers and tight ends during their break before the training camp begins.
