Kayla Harrison Celebrates UFC Victory with President Trump
UFC champion Kayla Harrison recently shared her feelings about the “surreal moment” she faced after winning her title, particularly when celebrating with former President Donald Trump. She expressed that it was an immense honor to represent her country in such a prestigious sport, recounting her experiences at two Olympics. Interestingly, during her first Olympic Games, she performed in front of President Putin but had yet to compete in front of an American leader.
“I’m incredibly proud to be an American,” Harrison stated, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity to share the moment with Trump. “When you find yourself in a position like that, you’d better seize it.”
At UFC 316, Harrison achieved a decisive victory over Juliana Pena, winning via submission. Post-fight, she greeted Trump, who was attending the event at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Their interaction included a warm hug before they left the octagon together.
She noted her excitement at seeing Trump and boxing great Mike Tyson after the match, remarking on the almost cinematic quality of the experience: “The President of the United States is kissing me on the cheek. I’m like a sacred cow, and Mike Tyson is right there! Am I in a movie?”
Harrison also donned her championship belt over Trump’s shoulders as the crowd erupted in applause. She attributed her triumph to her faith, particularly during the challenging journey of shedding weight to reach 135 pounds for the fight.
Reflecting on her sports career, she conveyed gratitude for the freedoms and opportunities available to her in the United States. “As Americans, we are fortunate to enjoy these rights. If I’d been born just 90 miles south in Cuba, my life would be completely different,” she noted, highlighting the stark contrast in opportunities.
