In South Carolina, police engaged in a rather unusual chase, following a piece of construction equipment on the highway for over an hour at a pace that resembled an average walking speed.
According to police reports, the chase reached a top speed of just 3 mph early on Sunday morning.
An officer noted seeing a large excavator while responding to a call around 3:30 am. The vehicle was seen slowly crossing Highway 78, as detailed in the report from North Charleston police.
Shortly after, officers received another call from a heavily damaged business that had been robbed and observed the excavator moving off at a crawl, police said.
As the chase progressed, several police units joined in, trying to keep pace with the sluggish moving machinery.
The speed of the excavator was so slow that police cruisers had to stop repeatedly to avoid letting it pass. They activated their lights and sirens and announced over the speaker that the driver had been ordered to stop. Other officers worked to block incoming traffic.
The pursuit continued for an hour and 12 minutes until the excavator ended up at the Charleston County Fairgrounds, where it became immobilized.
Authorities reported that the driver attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended when a police dog and its handler caught up with him.
The 53-year-old driver now faces charges, with his bond set at $22,000. He is facing two counts each of misuse of blue lights and malicious injury, as indicated by prison records.
