Red Sox Strengthen Bullpen with Alcala Trade
The Boston Red Sox are making moves to enhance their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Jorge Alcala. The transaction, announced on Wednesday, involved sending 21-year-old prospect Andy Lugo to the Minnesota Twins.
This season, Alcala has recorded an ERA of 8.88 over 22 appearances, allowing 24 runs in 24 and a third innings. It hasn’t been a great year for him, but the 29-year-old has shown potential in the past. Last season, he posted a more respectable ERA of 3.24 with an 8.5% walk rate across approximately 60 innings. His career statistics reveal an average ERA of 3.64.
Despite his struggles this year, Alcala has managed to maintain an impressive strikeout rate of 24.6%, averaging a career-high 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Red Sox, with a record of 34-36, are looking to fill gaps in their roster, especially with two key pitchers, Liam Hendriks and Justin Sulatin, currently injured. Fans are hopeful that Alcala can regain his form and help bolster the innings from the right side.
To make room for Alcala on the 40-man roster, the team designated Brian Van Bell for assignment. Van Bell had just been added to the active roster on Monday but did not get a chance to make his big league debut.
Despite recent struggles, the Red Sox bullpen ranks eighth in MLB with a 3.51 ERA this season. Nevertheless, their strikeout rate is just below league average at 8.52 per nine innings, so Alcala’s addition could be beneficial.
On the flip side, the Twins are clearing space on their roster by bringing in left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz. Wentz has spent most of his four-year MLB career with the Detroit Tigers, where he had a 5.81 ERA, but has shown improvement with a 3.32 ERA while playing for the Pirates over the past two seasons.
Andy Lugo, the prospect sent to Minnesota, has been performing well, with a .265/.327/.430 batting line in 44 games for Boston’s High A affiliate this season. He joined the Red Sox system in 2022 and has played various positions, including first base, third base, and left field.
