Senate Debates Trump’s Spending Bill Amid Voter Opposition

As discussions continue in the Senate, the Republican Party’s extensive spending and tax cuts bill, which President Trump refers to as his “big, beautiful bill,” faces significant pushback from the public. Recent polling reveals that a majority of American voters are against it.

A Quinnipiac University National Survey indicates that 53% of respondents oppose the bill, while only 27% are in favor. Interestingly, about 20% of those surveyed didn’t express a clear opinion.

Among Republicans, support for the bill stands at 67%, with 10% opposed, and 22% yet to share their views. In stark contrast, Democrats overwhelmingly reject the bill at a rate of 89% to 2%, while independent voters tilt against it by a margin of 57% to 20%.

Despite the negative feedback, Democrats remain confident that they can pass Trump’s proposed legislation.

The bill managed to pass one vote last month in the House of Representatives. Trump is pushing for a July 4 deadline for it to be finalized by Congress.

This GOP proposal embodies several key promises from Trump’s campaign, focusing on tax cuts, immigration policies, defense, energy, and debt management. It seeks to extend the tax cuts from his 2017 reforms, remove taxes on tips and overtime, allocate billions for border security, and reinforce stringent immigration measures.

Concerns Over Fiscal Impact

If enacted, this legislation could exacerbate the ongoing national fiscal deficit. Currently, the national debt sits at around $36 trillion.

Democrats criticize portions of the bill that involve adjustments to Medicaid funding, arguing that it may lead to serious cuts in vital safety net programs.

A portion of the proposed Medicaid adjustments, along with cuts to food assistance programs, aims to cover expenses for extending the 2017 tax cuts, which are set to expire soon. These alterations include new rules that impose work requirements for many individuals applying for Medicaid benefits.

Republican governors have united in their support for Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill,” as they call it, despite the backlash.

Democratic lawmakers underscore that, if enacted, the bill could result in a substantial reduction in Medicaid services. Poll findings reveal that 47% of voters advocate for increased federal funding for Medicaid, while 40% believe it should remain unchanged, and just 10% support cuts.

Partisan divides emerge in the responses: 69% of Democrats favor increased funding, whereas only 21% of Republicans share that sentiment. Among independents, 47% support funding increases for federal Medicaid.

Tim Malloy from Quinnipiac University commented on the uncertain future of Medicaid, emphasizing the need for careful handling of a program that serves millions of people.

The poll was conducted between June 5th and 9th, surveying 1,265 registered voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
