Eric Dane Discusses His ALS Diagnosis
In a recent sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer for “Good Morning America,” Eric Dane opened up about living with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He shared that each day serves as a stark reminder of his condition, saying, “I woke up every day and quickly reminded me that this was happening.” This sentiment was echoed by Sawyer, who responded, “That’s not a dream.”
Dane, who is known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” confirmed that his life has changed since receiving this diagnosis. Despite the challenges, he maintains a hopeful outlook, expressing, “I don’t think this is the end of my story.” His positivity shines through even when discussing the reality of living with ALS, acknowledging that it’s a significant change in his life.
Later in the interview, when Sawyer asked whom he would call first, Dane appeared emotional, underscoring the weight of his journey. He had publicly announced his diagnosis earlier in April, sharing gratitude for the support of his family as he navigates this difficult chapter. “I’m lucky enough to be able to continue working,” he mentioned, looking forward to returning to the set of “Euphoria” soon. During this period, he requested privacy for himself and his loved ones as they adjust to this new reality.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a neurological disorder that impacts motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control loss and complications in breathing and eating. The ALS Association notes that while life expectancy post-diagnosis is often around three years, some individuals may live for decades.
Interestingly, many notable figures, including physicist Stephen Hawking and baseball legend Lou Gehrig, have battled this disease. On a personal note, Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayhart and they have two children together, showing that family remains a vital part of his life during these trying times.
Dane’s full interview with Sawyer is set to air on Monday, June 16th, at 7 AM on “Good Morning America.” His journey is just beginning, but his resilience and commitment to staying engaged in his craft offers an inspiring perspective on facing adversity.
