Dick Vitale Critiques Knicks’ Coaching Search

Dick Vitale feels the Knicks may have erred in their recent decisions.

As the team looks for a new head coach, the 86-year-old commentator has voiced some skepticism about the direction they’re taking. He suggests that their best choice is the one they just let go, describing their search process as “embarrassing.”

On social media, Vitale expressed his frustration, stating, “The embarrassing thing is explaining the confusion when hiring a coach at the front office at @nyknicks. They had a guy who did a quality job in Tom Thibodeau. If the guy you choose was supposed to commit…” He added, “To humiliate everything they’ve been asking is to hire pathetic/Tom!”

Since Thibodeau’s firing on June 3, the Knicks have faced significant backlash from sports commentators. Former NBA coach PJ Carlesimo criticized the team during a podcast, calling them “their own worst enemy.” He remarked, “The Knicks always think they’re smarter than anyone else, and that’s Knicks’ philosophy.”

Carlesimo continued, “They believe they’re different, that they know better than the other teams. Often, they end up being their own worst enemy.”

Thibodeau, who coached the Knicks for five seasons, guided the team to the playoffs four times and their first appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years.

Breaking his silence on the firing, Thibodeau shared a message in the New York Times, thanking fans and reflecting on his time with the team. He wrote, “To the best city in the world with the best fans in the world: Thank you. When I was hired in 2020, I said this was my dream job. I am grateful that my dream has come true. I appreciate the players and coaching staff who made this franchise special.”

Thibodeau concluded with heartfelt gratitude, recognizing the fans’ unwavering support: “Watching you support our team and seeing your garden ignite with unparalleled Knicks energy is something I will never forget.”
