Increased Security for NYC Jewish Sites Following Israeli Strikes on Iran
The NYPD has announced a boost in security at Jewish locations in New York City after Israel initiated strikes in Iran overnight. These protective measures are intended to safeguard the Jewish community amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
“In response to increasing attention, we’re deploying more resources to support Jewish communities, Israel, and other notable sites across NYC,” the NYPD communicated on X while the attacks were underway on Thursday night.
Mayor Eric Adams has been actively discussing the situation and noted that NYPD’s counter-terrorism units are closely observing developments. “We’re enhancing security in places of worship and at Israel’s diplomatic missions,” Adams stated in his message on X. He expressed hope for peace within the community.
Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch are scheduled to hold a press conference later today concerning the ongoing developments, particularly in connection with planned anti-ICE protests this weekend.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul indicated that there are no credible threats to the city at this time but mentioned that security at sensitive locations, along with cybersecurity measures, is being increased across the state.
Additionally, there is heightened security outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, according to reports. Community Security Services, a group that trains volunteers to guard synagogues, has advised their network to remain watchful and report any suspicious activity. They also emphasized the need to review security protocols and request an increased police presence.
These heightened security measures coincide with Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 20 senior Iranian officials, including General Hossein Salami, chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, and General Mohammad Bagheri, the Iranian army’s chief of staff.
The operation, termed “Operation Raizinglion,” appears to follow unsuccessful efforts at nuclear negotiations in recent months.
In the aftermath of Israel’s proactive strike on Iran, the US Navy has redirected the guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hadner towards the Eastern Mediterranean, with another destroyer moving closer to Israel, according to US officials.
This action mirrors US movements in April 2024, when Iran launched a ballistic missile toward Israel, prompting defensive missile launches from the USS Carney and USS Early Burk.
