Concerns Over Protests and ICE Safety
Todd Lyons, the director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), expressed his worries on a podcast this past Friday about potential violent incidents during the nationwide left-wing protests planned for Saturday.
The protests, dubbed a “no King” demonstration, aim to challenge the Trump administration, raising alarms among law enforcement about possible unrest. Lyons noted that while he and his agency support the right to peaceful protests, he fears that this event could serve as a “perfect catalyst” for attacks on ICE agents.
He commented, “These agitators, these anarchists, and these funded groups often disrupt peaceful protests. They infiltrate these gatherings and incite violence, twisting the message.” He added that his primary concern is that this negative energy could be targeted at ICE personnel, making the situation particularly dangerous.
This protest coincides with a military parade celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. military, Flag Day, and President Trump’s birthday. A spokesperson for the “No Kings” movement mentioned that millions are anticipated to participate in over 1,800 scheduled events across the country.
They stated, “The King is not a national day of rebellion. From urban areas to small towns, courthouse steps to community parks, we are taking action to reject authoritarianism and illustrate what democracy looks like.”
Lyons also warned that the aggressive anti-ICE rhetoric from some Democrats could lead to severe consequences. “Someone is going to get killed, right? It’s just a matter of time, because even a thrown rock or a Molotov cocktail can be lethal,” he remarked, emphasizing the harmful rhetoric gaining traction online.
Social media captured incidents from Saturday, showing a person wearing a motorcycle helmet throwing rocks at a vehicle carrying an ICE agent during the protests in Los Angeles.
Additionally, Homeland Security Advisor Tricia McLaughlin accused Democrats of inciting violence against ICE, as noted in a statement regarding the riots, which included attacks on federal immigration officials.
