Texas Tech’s Strategic Moves

Texas Tech is making some significant changes.

Just a week after a tough loss to Texas in the Women’s College World Series Championship, the Red Raiders are actively working to build a team capable of returning to Oklahoma City next year.

In addition to re-signing their ace pitcher, Nijaly Canadi, who reportedly secured another NIL deal exceeding $1 million, Texas Tech has brought in five standout players through the transfer portal. They’ve managed to scoop up four of the top ten players available and one more ranking within the top thirty. Notably, three of these new additions were key players in the World Series this year.

Leading the charge is sophomore Cait Lindtery, recognized as UCLA’s top pitcher this season, who also proved to be a solid two-way player, notching 35 hits and scoring 30 runs. She ranked 11th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratios with a notable 5.06. From the mound, she recorded a 20-5 record with a 2.64 ERA and struck out 172 batters.

ON3 rated Terry as the third-best player in the softball transfer portal, further enhancing Texas Tech’s lineup. Also joining is Taylor Panel, a talented third baseman from Tennessee, regarded as the fourth-best player. This American redshirt sophomore led the Lady Vols with an impressive .398 batting average, 74 hits, and 16 home runs this season.

Adding to the lineup’s potential, Pannell is expected to significantly strengthen the Red Raiders’ batting. Meanwhile, catcher Jasmine Burns, ranked sixth in the transfer portal and known for her power, set a single-season home run record at Ohio with 72 RBIs and a slugging rate of 1.006, solidifying her place as a formidable hitter.

Mia Williams comes from Florida, marked as ON3’s seventh-best transfer. She’s the daughter of former NBA champion Jason Williams and had a standout season with 61 hits and 44 RBIs, navigating the Gators with a 1.144 OPS.

Lastly, Texas Tech welcomed Jackie Lis, a three-time Missouri Valley Conference first-team selection and former MVP. This junior shortstop led Southern Illinois to three MVC titles, setting a program record with 44 career home runs, making her the 28th best player on the transfer portal.

It’s clear that Texas Tech’s recent talent acquisitions are partly due to the financial advantages from NIL and revenue sharing. Recent reports suggest that the Red Raiders may distribute $55 million this year across all sports, potentially leading Division I schools in spending.

Interestingly, Terry, Burns, and Williams all credited the Matador Club and the Nir Group at Texas Tech in their social media announcements regarding their commitments to the team.

In most Power 4 programs, revenue sharing primarily prioritizes football and men’s basketball, with women’s basketball often receiving a smaller share. However, Texas Tech seems to be capitalizing on market gaps, potentially positioning itself for greater fan engagement and championship opportunities in softball.

Currently, one of the best players left in the softball transfer portal is Maya Johnson from Belmont, positioned as the eighth-best transfer. This left-handed pitcher led all Division I pitchers in categories like strikeouts and shutouts this season.

Lucky for Texas Tech, they likely don’t need to pursue another ace pitcher with Canady and Terry already in their ranks.
