Brandon Johnson Calls on Chicago Residents to Stand Up to ICE

Chicago Mayor’s Call for Protests Against Immigration Enforcement

Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has faced significant unpopularity, is encouraging residents to “stomp” onto the streets this weekend. This call to action is aimed at challenging federal immigration enforcement, amid a backdrop of protests occurring in several major cities nationwide.

Concerns have arisen regarding potential mass riots connected to the so-called “No Kings” protests, prompting Johnson to advocate for demonstrations in a city already grappling with financial issues.

When asked about the protests, Johnson expressed his support for the movement and emphasized his hope that participants would engage actively. “This is the fight we must engage in,” he stated, whether through legal avenues or active protests. According to reports, he believes it’s critical to raise opposing views at this moment.

“It’s a battle for our culture, our democracy, and our humanity. I count on everyone in Chicago to resist during this time,” he asserted. Still, he acknowledged that anyone stepping “outside of constitutional protection” would be held “responsible and accountable.”

Johnson contended that the protests weren’t merely about immigration, but rather about reclaiming control over the country. He condemned the current administration, claiming it ignored constitutional principles and democratic values. He described recent events as a troubling chapter in American history, drawing a controversial parallel between current leadership and historical figures he perceives as tyrannical.

In a notable press conference, Johnson’s Chief of Staff, Christina Pasion Zayas, announced that federal authorities might deploy “mini tanks” in the city, increasing tensions. “We have tactical teams. We have mini tanks, and there are other methods they plan to use,” she warned.

This latest outburst reflects Johnson’s ongoing critique of former President Trump, whom he has previously likened to the Confederacy—a comparison he reiterated earlier in the week. Despite the contentious nature of his comments, polls indicate that Johnson faces significant disapproval from the public, with recent surveys placing his approval rating at just 6.6%, a staggering 79.9% of respondents expressing disapproval.
