Washington, D.C. is set to host a massive celebration on Saturday, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. military. This event will coincide with President Trump’s 79th birthday.
This parade, which is expected to cost between $25 million and $45 million, will showcase around 6,600 soldiers alongside numerous vehicles and aircraft, according to Army officials.
“We’re going to have a great time. We’re going to have a great celebration,” Trump stated, highlighting the event as a demonstration of military strength.
The plans for the festival have been in the works for nearly two years, but the military vehicle parade is a recent addition. Interestingly, while the celebration happens to fall on Trump’s birthday, it’s just a coincidence.
The origins of this celebration date back to June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army following battles with the British. George Washington was subsequently appointed as the Commander.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll referred to the parade as an “amazing opportunity” to share stories about the Army and suggested it could boost recruitment.
The festivities kick off at 9:30 AM at the National Mall and will go until 6 PM. The military parade itself starts at 6:30 PM, moving along Constitutional Avenue. There will also be special coverage of the parade on air. A fireworks display is scheduled for around 9:45 PM, following the parade.
This event has garnered significant interest, particularly since it won’t be the first large-scale military display in D.C.; the National Victory Parade saw around 200,000 attendees and featured about 8,000 service members back in 1991.
To accommodate heavy military vehicles, which aren’t typically suited for city streets, preparations have been made to protect D.C.’s roads. Steel plates will be laid down at critical turning points along the route, and the Army has committed to repairing any damage incurred.
Colonel Jesse Curry, head of the Army’s engineering office, noted that the vehicles are equipped with rubber tracks to further minimize impact, and they’ll be moving at slower speeds.
Throughout the parade, historical military eras will be represented. Attendees can expect to see soldiers dressed in period-appropriate uniforms and gear, illustrating the evolution of the armed forces from the Revolutionary War to modern times.
The beginning of the parade will feature elements from the American Revolution, including soldiers on horseback. Following that, representations of the Civil War, World War I, and World War II will be highlighted, showcasing various vehicles from those eras.
World War II will have a significant presence, with many iconic American trucks and aircraft making appearances, including historic bombers and fighter planes.
As the Cold War era is recalled, aircraft such as the Cobra and Iroquois helicopters will also be on display.
The final segment will include modern military equipment used in recent conflicts, underscoring ongoing advancements in military technology.
Despite the fanfare, there are concerns over costs as Congressional members scrutinize government spending during the Trump administration.
