Important Moment on the Baseball Field
Cade Smith found himself just inches away from a potentially terrifying situation on the baseball field. The Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher was in the middle of a tense fifth inning during a 2-2 game against the Seattle Mariners when Rowdy Tellez stepped up to bat.
Smith delivered an 88 mph breaking ball that landed in the bottom part of the strike zone. Tellez, known for being a tough opponent, made solid contact.
Tellez slammed a line drive that zipped back at Smith at an impressive 106.6 mph. There hardly seemed to be time to react; the ball barely grazed the edge of Smith’s hat, avoiding a serious injury for the pitcher.
The impact sent the ball flying into the outfield, enabling Tellez to secure a double. Strangely enough, Smith didn’t lose his composure completely, as he managed to hit the next batter and finish the inning without further incident.
Despite the dramatic moment, Seattle scored four runs over the next seven innings, ultimately claiming a 7-2 victory. Tellez’s earlier hit in the game showcased remarkable power, registering an exit velocity of 107.3 mph. In fact, his average exit speed stands at 91.3 mph, placing him in the 80th percentile among qualified batters.
At this point, Cleveland’s record slipped to 35-33, leaving them 9.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers. The Mariners, on the other hand, are now 4.5 games behind the Houston Astros, with an equal record of 34-34.
