Tragic Attack in Minnesota: Representative and Husband Shot

A Minnesota representative and her husband were tragically killed during a brutal attack at their home on Saturday morning. This incident followed another shooting involving a state senator and his wife, who were also shot multiple times in their residence about an hour prior to the representative’s attack.

Melissa Hortman, the Democrat state president, indicated that an individual dressed in a police uniform is thought to have carried out the shooting that resulted in her husband’s death. According to reports, a man, presumed to be impersonating a police officer, fled the scene after officers arrived to conduct a safety check. The weapon used in the attack was reported to be found in a black SUV modified to resemble a genuine police vehicle.

Hortman previously served as the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

This violent attack on Hortman coincided with a similar incident involving Democratic state Senator John Hoffman. Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz characterized the attack as “a politically motivated assassination.”

Waltz expressed deep sorrow regarding the incident: “Today, we confront an unimaginable tragedy in Minnesota. My dear friend and colleague, Melissa Hortman, along with her husband Mark, were shot dead this morning, which appears to be politically motivated. Our state has lost a remarkable leader, and I’ve lost a cherished friend. Speaker Hortman was dedicated to serving Minnesotans with grace, compassion, and relentless determination. Her efforts to better our community are irreplaceable and deserving of recognition.”

The governor also reported that the senator and his wife survived their attack without needing surgery.

“Hoffman has undergone surgery and is currently receiving care, and we are, perhaps cautiously, hopeful that they will recover from this assault,” the Minnesota governor noted. “This was a targeted act of political violence. Our democracy thrives on peaceful discourse, and such violence only exacerbates divisions.”

Police have recovered a purported manifesto from the suspect, indicating a list of targets that included several lawmakers. “When we searched the vehicle, we found a manifesto identifying various officials, prompting a state-wide alert,” added a police chief. “This was not an actual police officer; he was merely impersonating one.”

A manhunt is currently underway for the suspect, with authorities cautioning that he is armed and poses a threat.

In light of the recent targeted shootings against state lawmakers, police have recommended that individuals avoid participating in planned statewide protests, as stated by a Minnesota patrol official.
