Defense Secretary Speaks on Israel-Iran Conflict
Defense Secretary Pete Hegses reassured Americans on Saturday that President Donald Trump is actively engaged in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. He emphasized that this situation is not just another routine matter for the president.
During an appearance on “Fox and Friends,” Hegses stated, “Americans can be confident that President Trump is fully engaged. This isn’t an automatic pen moment. The world seems to be distracted or not attentive enough.”
The Israeli Defense Forces have intensified their operations in Iran after months of stalled nuclear negotiations. In response to Israeli attacks, Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles across different parts of Israel.
Some lawmakers have criticized the media for being overly harsh on Trump, questioning the effectiveness of Vice President Kamala Harris in addressing these tensions.
Hegses appeared to comment shortly after an investigation was initiated by the Trump administration, following former President Joe Biden’s various decisions that raised concerns about his cognitive abilities.
When asked about the latest developments in the conflict by Fox News’ Charlie, Hegses noted that the administration is closely monitoring the situation, stating that Trump is guiding the nation’s strategic approach in the region.
He also mentioned that, given Israel’s assessment of Iran’s capabilities, they felt compelled to act, noting, “We are committed to self-defense and ensuring the safety of our personnel and interests.”
“We prioritize the safety of Americans,” Hegses insisted. “It’s evident to Iran that they shouldn’t direct their aggression toward the US. That would be unwise.” He reiterated Trump’s preference for a peaceful resolution to the tension through negotiations.
The Defense Secretary confirmed that the administration was aware of Israel’s military actions beforehand, shifting focus to maintaining security for American citizens.
“Our role is clear; we are prepared and responsive. We provide the president with the flexibility needed to ensure safety for all,” he stated. “I can’t say I’m surprised by the ongoing dynamics, but we’re monitoring closely.”
In conclusion, Hegses stressed that Trump’s position is firm regarding Iran not pursuing nuclear weapons, as that represents a direct threat to Israel, prompting their response.
