One individual is currently in police custody and all flights experienced delays after a “direct threat” was made regarding the safety of Alaska Airlines aircraft on Saturday at Seattle Tacoma International Airport. The incident involved Alaska Airlines flight 2123, operated by Horizon Air, which was en route from Seattle to Walla Walla, Washington. This all took place around 1 PM.
While taxiing to the runway, it seems a situation arose that led the crew to follow specific protocols. They managed to secure the aircraft away from the airport on the runway. Local and federal law enforcement were immediately alerted and approached the plane, with assistance from the FBI Seattle and the Seattle Police Department.
The suspect, who remains unidentified, is now in custody, confirmed both by the Port of Seattle and the airline. The Federal Aviation Administration subsequently issued ground stops in the area “for security” reasons. Following the occurrence, two of the runways were closed down, leaving only one operational.
In light of the threat, Alaska Airlines mentioned that at least six flights were canceled, while two others were diverted. A spokesperson stated, “We are dedicated to ensuring our guests reach their destinations as safely and promptly as possible.” However, the exact nature of the incident remains unclear.
On board that flight were 68 passengers and four crew members. According to the Port of Seattle, plans are in place to ensure the safe return of passengers to the terminal after undergoing security screenings. The aircraft will also go through additional security measures before continuing its journey.
