Rory McIlroy Shares His Thoughts on Recent Performance
I think Rory McIlroy admitted to feeling “pretty average” about his current standing, hinting at a tie for 49th after scoring 10-over par at Oakmont. It’s not exactly something to boast about.
Interestingly, his decision to speak publicly was a shift from his usual silence, which has caught many off guard. McIlroy, who clinched the US Open title back in 2011, faced the media after finishing the third round with a score of 4-over 74.
He had played on Thursday and Friday but opted out of speaking to reporters, leading to speculation about his frustration with the course. When pressed on this, he clarified, “Not,” referring to the idea that frustration was the cause. “That’s even more frustrating for you,” he added, perhaps considering the media’s perspective as well.
It’s worth noting McIlroy achieved a career grand slam after winning the Masters, which adds to the pressure he faces. During his recent rounds, though, his emotions were, um, evident—like when he threw a club on No. 12 and damaged a tee marker midway through his last holes in the second round.
“It’s funny,” he commented. “It’s much easier to ride the cut line when you don’t really care if you’re here on the weekend.” He seemed to be reflecting on whether he wanted to stick around for more rounds.
McIlroy also remarked on his absence from media interactions, subtly arguing that it’s not a new behavior for him. “Augusta, we skipped you guys on Thursday,” he explained, indicating a history of selective engagement.
There could be numerous reasons behind McIlroy’s current state—perhaps he’s simply weary of the expectations, or maybe it’s the ongoing discussions surrounding his equipment. After all, he is known for being somewhat accessible, particularly during a time when he took a firm stand on the PGA Tour amidst the Liv Golf controversy.
